Dal adas is a vegetarian red lentil stew from southern Iran. The starting point for our recipe comes from “From a Persian Kitchen” by Atoosa Sepehr. To simplify the spicing, we use curry powder and supplement with a little ground cinnamon. And for bright flavor, we add chopped tomatoes that have been lightly cooked with the aromatics and spices. In non-summer months, opt for a pint of cherry or grape tomatoes; they don’t need to be cored, but do chop them. Serve this thick, hearty stew with basmati rice or warmed flatbread.

Tip

Don’t cut the potatoes too large or they won’t cook in the same time as the lentils. Be careful not to overcook the lentil mixture, as red lentils become soft and mushy with extended simmering.

Ingredients

  • ¾

cup red lentils, rinsed and drained

  • 1

medium Yukon Gold potato, peeled and cut into ¼-inch cubes

Excellent recipe!
My husband and I both loved this. He had a little meat on the side, I did not and found it filling. I served it over rice with a cucumber-tomato salad on the side.

Great Weeknight Meal
Cooked 1 1/2 cups of brown basmati to serve it on. Both of us were big fans.

Delish!
This soup is great. Added more lime juice than in the recipe because it’s such a great flavor in this soup

A fantastic, fast vegan meal
This recipe has entered the regular rotation in our house. It's flavourful and fast. We've only used cherry tomatoes in the recipe, which turns out very well (especially if they are in season). The recipe is good either way, but in our opinion better with the fresh hot pepper over the cayenne. A jalapeño works very well here.

This was super good! Perfect amount of spices, which made it very flavorful. I loved having the potatoes, which makes the soup more substantial. Definitely a winner!

This is a fantastic dal--the lime really adds great flavor. I served it with a dollop of yogurt and some cilantro. This reheats wonderfully.

I did not like this the combination of flavors- curry, potato, tomato and lime are not good together. Truth be told- while I ate it I liked it but after I did not.
