This stir-fry of beef with tomatoes, known as “beef tomato,” is a popular dish in Hawaii. It actually has Cantonese origins and was brought to the islands by immigrants. In our six-ingredient version, then we cook them briefly along with aromatic ginger. Oyster sauce or hoisin sauce contributes the characteristic salty-sweet flavor to the dish. Serve over steamed rice.

quick and delicious!
Delicious one pan quick dinner. Leftovers heat up beautifully for next day lunch.

Beef tomato yum!
Made with a marbled featherblade steak and sugar bomb vine ripened tomatoes. Used the garlic and ginger and premium oyster sauce. This was DELICIOUS and quick on a Tuesday night!

This was ok . . .
Easy to do, but I found it to be pretty bland. I used both ginger and garlic and it needed more of both; it also needed more tomato. I would also prefer it to be a little saucier. Overall, I think it’s a good base to riff off of, but as is, it’s just ok.

Just ok
This was quick and easy to make, but really bland; there was not much flavor at all. It’ might be a good base to riff off of, but it’s really lacking as is; it needs shoyu or soy sauce, mirin and/or rice vinegar - something to add some interest or complexity to it. I wouldn’t make it again. It’s not often that I’m not pleased with MS recipes, but I was sorely disappointed in this one.

Excellent weeknight recipe
I cooked this dish on a Tuesday night. I hadn’t eaten much during the day and ended up eating the entire dish myself. Very good.
